Questions 21 –25
Read what Marleen and Mark say about the new .99 cent coin and answer the questions. Choose A, B, C or D
The new .99 cent coin |
Marleen Fantastic idea. I often wonder why things cost something and 99 cents. For example, I just bought a toothbrush at the local shop and it cost €1.99. I gave the man in the shop €2 and I waited for my 1 cent change but he told me he didn’t have any one cent coins. I was very upset because this is the second time this has happened to me this week and I have already lost 2 cents. If I had the new 99 cent coin I would not feel bad because I would just give a €1 coin and a .99 cent coin. I saw on TV that the manager of the bank in our town also thinks it’s a good idea. He said nobody wants to carry around 1 cent coins because they are really heavy. I agree with him. I hope the new .99 cent coin comes out soon. |
Mark At first, I thought it was a great idea but now I am really worried that perhaps they will not bring out the new .99 cent coin. I really think that all the shop owners don’t want the new coin because they will lose all the 1 cents that people don’t take back in change. If you add all these cents together it’s a lot of money. So, I think the shop owners will decide to put up their prices. This will be really terrible for me and my family. Now, I pay €1.99 for yogurt and I don’t know what I will do if they put up the price to €2. I can’t afford to pay so much for yogurt because I have six children. €2 is a lot more than €1.99, isn’t it? I am so worried about this that I can’t sleep at night. Of course, if they do bring out the .99 cent coin and the shops put up the price to €2 then where will I find the 1 cent more to pay because there won’t be 1 cent coins any more. It’s really confusing for me. |

Questions 26–30

The Elephant Rope
A man was walking through an elephant camp and he saw that the elephants were not kept in cages or held (26) chains.
All that was holding them back from escaping the camp was a small piece of rope tied to one of (27) legs. As the man looked at the elephants he was completely confused and could not understand why the elephants didn’t just use their strength to break the rope and escape from the camp. They could easily have done so, but instead, they didn’t try to escape. The man wanted to know the answer so he asked one of the elephant trainers why the elephants were just standing there and (28) tried to escape.
‘When they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and it’s enough to hold them’, the trainer replied. ‘As they grow up, they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they don’t try to break free’.
The only reason the elephants weren’t breaking free and escaping from the camp was that over time they did not (29) this belief and thought that it just wasn’t possible to escape.
No matter how much the world tries to hold you back, always continue with the belief that what you want to get is possible. Believing you can become successful is the most important (30) in actually doing it.
